Best Hindi Albums/Tracks of 2011

Okay,I did a smiliar piece for 2010.I love doing lists.I love collecting memories, dont I?! So,2011 might not have been a year of Bollywood blockbusters. But music was grand. From good movies and average.A small list to register the same!

  •  Soundtrack – I have heard the movie too,is good. But music – There is rock, there is trance, there is classical, there is remix! More than just the variety in genre, the music possesses you.The lyrics connect with the conscience.Direct!
  • Shaitan – Firstly, whattay movie! And secondly, they didnt make the movie and music separately! They entagled the two beautifully.Tracks like ‘Shaitan theme’ are cool ,yet sensible. ‘Fareeda’ is an absolute masterpiece. I reach a different level of nothingness when I listen to that track.Puts right in your face, what you actually are! ‘Pintya’ – enhanced folk music! Superb! ‘Khoya Khoya Chand (Remix)’ was outstaning.
  • Rockstar – This album is a natural entrant to this list. AR Rehman has outdone himself. Also,Mohit Chauhan.Versatile is the word for him. Some really beautiful tracks.’Dichotomy of Fame’ is a brilliant music fusion.Shehnai in it is just great.’ ‘Tango for Taj ‘ is a great compose. ‘Katiya Karoon’ just lifts you off your seat and puts you into some dance mood! ‘Hawa Hawa’ is such a brilliant way of telling a story. Also, awesome music. The way ‘Sheher Mein’ is composed is sheer creative genius.Offcourse, brilliant lyrics all around.
  • Delhi Belly – ‘New India’s Different Music’. This is what I would term this album.Creative Brilliance nevertheless.Makes you smirk.Every song!
  • Mere Brother Ki Dulhan – From the sufi ‘Ishq Risk’ to the rocking ‘Dhunki’ to the cool ‘Choomantar’ and peppy ‘Madhubala’ and ‘Do Dhaari Talwar’,this has been a great album.
  • 7 Khoon Maaf – Again, every song a gem.’Daarling’ was superb. So was ‘Bekaraan’.’O Mama’ is another song that pushes me into the Nothingness zone.
  • Shor in the City – Brave movie and complementing good music.Saibo has to be the romantic song of the year.Loved the way Tochi Raina called Karma,a total bitch! ‘Deem Deem tana’ is special.Well composed.
  • Matargashtiya – Chalo Dilli.
  • Saj Dhaj Ke, Rabba Main Toh Mar Gaya,Mallo Malli – Mausam
  • Love Breakups Zindagi – ‘Rozaana’, ‘Rab Rakha’ and ‘Chhayi Hai Tanhaayi’.You would want to wake up to Rozaana, daily. Sweet album altogether.
  • ‘Bhare Naina’ – Ra.One – What a brilliant track.Classic! This song just grew on me.
  • ‘Subha Hone Na De’ and ‘Tu Mera Hero’ are two very sweet tracks from Desi Boyz.
  • Ladies v/s Ricky Bahl – Nice, happening album to end the year with.Full foot tapping tracks.

This is as far as my list goes.I might have missed a few obvious ones. Please be kind enough to remind me of the same.

I Miss Indi-pop

I have grown up in the era, whent the society migrated from Chitrahaar to Philips Top -10. From the Indian music to the fusion of Indo-Pop music.

Baba Sehgal’s Aaja Meri Gaadi Main Baith Ja, Alisha’s Made In India, etc where it all started for me. Foot-tapping music with lyrics that had a tinge of the West and that could connect instantly with the hope and aspirations of an emerging, young India.

There are so many tracks, albums, artists I can talk about. A few of them are :

1)  Usha Utthup’s Hari Om Hari(I remember the spoof – Hari Om Hari,Sridevi Mari :D)
2)  Daler Mehndi’s Tunak Tunak tun (Remember dancing to it in Std.6).Also, the video is worth a rewatch. :D.
Also,Bolo Tara Ra Ra – The Marriage Band’s favourite.
3)  Soul reaping music by the Colonial Brothers
4)  Euphoria’s brilliant romantic music. “Tum Ho Meri Main Tumhara”, “Kaise Bhulegi mera Naam”, “Kabhi aana tu meri gali” and Offcourse, “Maaeri”.
I remember my elder brother pointing out to parents. “He is a doctor and makes music. I can do that too” (And so he did).
5)  There was Shubha Mudgal’s Abke Sawaan. Perfect fusion.
6)  Oh,and how can I forget a zorbing ball Adnan Sami, rocking the nation with his classic Lift Karadey. Followed by some really sweet romantic and fun songs. The one with Sr. Bachchan. And the World Cup song, “Aaaye O… Aye O Aaa”
7)  Falguni Pathak’s amzing girlie love numbers. “Maine Paayal Hai Chhankayi”. At school,we did a small performace of this song for Annual day.Remember being an infinitesimally small part of it.
8)  Lucky Ali’s hypotic voice really shook my soul with “Gori teri aankhein”.
9)  Aghosh’s “Mil jo jaaye thoda paisa”. A beautiful comment on life in a struggling, growing India.
10)  Band of Boys – “Tu hi mera Pyaar Gori”. Amazing Song
11)  Aryans – “Ankhon mein tera hi chehra”, “Dekha hai teri ankhon mein”. Sigh!
12)  “Chui Mui Si tum lagti ho”. Sweetest song. Dad used to listen to it every morning.
12)  And then, the remix gen songs. “Mere Naseeb Mein”, “Bheegi Beegi Raaton Mein”, “Kehdoon Tumhein”. I studied my 9th and 10th listening to these over FM.So,so fresh!
13)  Rageshwari – “Kahin karta hoga,woh mera…..”. She was a heartthrob once.
14)  Bombay Vikings – “Chhod Do Aanchal”, “Woh Chali”.
15)  Babul Supriyo – “Sochta Hoon uska dil…” …. Grew up listening to this song and feeling. My school bestie’s then favorite song.
16)  Shan’s “Tanha Dil” and “Bhool Jaa” are amongst my all time favourites.
17)  Bombay Rockers,Zeus,Juggy d,Jay Sean,Veronica,Raghav Mathur gave me my junior college playlist.
18)  Alka Yagnik’s “Dil tha yahaan abhi abhi” and Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan Sahab’s some magical numbers.

And the list could go on and on and on….

But where is Indi-pop now? Disappeared? Died? Why? :O

P.S. – Don’t know if Kailash Kher and Kailasa’s music can be included into Indi-pop. They are just too divine for that.

My Top 6 ‘Touching’ Hollywood Movies

I felt like recording the Top 6 ‘Touching’ Hollywood Movies I have watched. They are :

  1. The Shawshank Redemption – With a score of 9.2/10 on IMDB, this movie tops IMDB’s TOP 250 list since decades.
  2. The Great Debaters – It is a movie that takes up the issue of Black v/s White, in a very sensitive manner.
  3. Invictus – A movie that marks to legends, South African  President “Nelson Mandela” and the person who played it “Morgan Freeman“.
  4. The Pianist – A very slow, sensitive movie, showing the Ghetto Period and the painful life story of a Jewish Pianist.
  5. Cast Away – Very touching acting by the very skilled Tom Hanks, in a brilliant, lone-on-an-island drama.
  6. The Terminal – Another great performance by the very special Tom Hanks.  Shows Comedy in pain.

Each of these movies, makes you smile, sometimes laugh, and sometimes weep. They are very touching to every human being with a heart.

The best part about these movies, is that they make you realize the value of the human life and tells you that there is this very tiny sweet, good, part; in each one of us. But most importantly, they teach us how to be happy in adversities and how, “HOPE,IS SUCH A GOOD THING”!
